A quick round-up

Here are stories I found interesting and you might, too:

* Wall Street Journal piece on the chemicals in household cleaners.

* Showtime wisely passes on insulting, asinine L-Word spinoff.

* I feel sorry for this Graffiti Girl who’s facing serious hard time. Am I a sap?

* Kooky Cloris Leachman and Gene Hackman had “epic sex”? Weird.

* She’s gonna play Judy Garland?!

* Artist Justine Lai paints realist portraits of herself having sex with U.S. presidents.

* Wow, talk about old meets new: Modernist architect Frank Gehry has been picked to design an Eisenhower monument in D.C.

“Rhoda” on DVD, at long last

Thank Christ! I have griped very publicly about the fact that television’s Rhoda is not availbale on DVD. So imagine my joy when I just checked Amazon again (I’m obsessed) and learned the season one discs will be released April 21.

Hallelujah!

The series showed us Rhoda’s life after she left Minneapolis (and The Mary Tyler Moore Show) to follow her dream of being a high profile window dresser in the Big Apple. It starred, of course, Valerie Harper as Rhoda, but also future Simpsons voice star Julie Kavner as Rhoda’s little sis Brenda and the incomparable Nancy Walker as their lovably overbearing mother Ida.

The show featured guest spots from many of Rhoda’s friends back in Minneapolis including Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman, Ed Asner and Gavin Macleod and also showcased future stars like Judd Hirsch, and the late John Ritter and Ron Silver.

Do you love Rhoda? I can only vaguely remember watching this show in the 1970s. I was but a wee child so I’m super excited to experience it again!

Cloris Leachman and Jack Black on ‘The Office’

Speaking of Mary Tyler Moore alum (see pervious post), Cloris Leachman is making a cameo on The Office next week along with Jack Black and Jessica Alba.

According to Us magazine, the trio appear as stars in a Hollywood flick and there’s a kissing scene with Jack and Cloris! Hell yeah.

Wow, Cloris, Jack, Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson – that must have been a funny set. How did they get anything done?

It’s scheduled to air next Thursday, January 29. UPDATE: The more recent news I’ve been reading says this episode will air the Thursday after the Super Bowl, which would be Feb. 5.

Cloris Leachman rules!

Have any of you been watching Cloris Leachman kicking ass on Dancing With the Stars? I don’t watch the show but I’ve been keeping up with Cloris, star of Mary Tyler Moore, Young Frankenstein, The Last Picture Show and so many others great films, plays and television show, on various blogs. I think she is an amazing, bawdy, fun woman. You need to watch some clips of Cloris on YouTube, especially her devastatingly funny bit at Bob Saget‘s recent roast to get an idea of her sense of humor.

Here is a clip from the beginning of Cloris’s reign on Dancing With the Stars, when she was relying on her comedic chops:

And here is Cloris this past Monday doing some beautiful dancing:

Isn’t she awesome?

All of ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ on DVD now

As an avid fan of the Mary Tyler Moore show, I’m thrilled to learn the entire series will finally be available on DVD. I watched Seasons 1-4 in a breathless marathon only to be shocked to find out the last three seasons were not available on DVD.

Lucky for me, the folks at 20th Century Fox got on the ball. It was probably because Oprah made such a fuss over the show last spring when she hosted an hour-long tribute to the show (and converted her studio into a replica of the WJM newsroom).

Mary Tyler Moore deserved every Emmy it won for its groundbreaking portrayal of a single thirtysomething career girl. Mary Richardson paved the way for bright single ladies like Liz Lemon. Plus, look at those kicky clothes:

The show’s cast – the peerless Valerie Harper as Mar’s best pal Rhoda, Ed Asner as her curmudgeony boss Lou Grant, Ted Knight as dufus weatherman Ted Baxter, a vivacious Cloris Leachman as Mary’s neighbor Phyllis, and future Love Boat captain Gavin MacLeod as the unflappable Murray Slaughter – set an unbeatable standard for television ensembles.

Later, the show added Betty White and Georgia Engle to the shenanigans.

I seriously got chills when the entire cast -sans the late Ted Knight – reunited for an appearance at the Oscars two years ago. (Click to enlarge):

Also, best opening tune ever! And covered by everyone from Joan Jett to Husker Du.

Even cooler: every single member of the cast, with the exception of Ted Knight and Georgia Engel, is a vegetarian. Makes me love them all even Moore, uh more. UPDATE: ACTUALLY ONLY MARY TYLER MOORE AND CLORIS LEACHMAN ARE VEGETARIANS.

Are you a fan of the show? Do you have a favorite character?
