Amy Poehler is leaving ‘SNL’ (for good)

This is a bug bummer for anyone who still tunes into Saturday Night Live to see Amy Poehler work her sketch comedy magic. Poehler is finally making like Baby Mama cohort Tina Fey (and everyone else who had talent on the show) and getting the hell out of dodge.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Poehler is leaving the show in November. Amy said:

It’s gonna be really hard — Boyz II Men hard — to say goodbye to yesterday. But like any good drug, you need to know when to put it down.

Amy’s new show is from the same execs behind The Office and might actually be a forum worthy of her talents.

Sorry, Lorne Michaels. There is but one last reason to watch SNL these days and her name is Kristen Wiig.

Still, if the writing sucks, the writing sucks. How long ’til Wiig wises up? At least she’s already branching out into movies like Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story. I can’t wait to see her play a nutty roller derby girl in next year’s Whip It!

I’ve been a SNL enthusiast for a long time, but last season was about as bad as those painfully awkward years in the early 1980s when everybody watched only too see Eddie Murphy. Lorne has got to crack the whip, cut the fat, hire better writers and more talented cast members. Like, now.

If Lorne needs guidance, he should remember this: Go female. SNL has a long tradition of introducing the world to funny women. Many of my favorite funny females got their start on the show like: Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Mary Gross, Julia-Louis Dreyfuss, Joan Cusack, Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, Julia Sweeney, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo , (who was terrible on SNL, but went on to do some amazing work on The Ben Stiller Show), Laura Kightlinger, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, Casey Wilson, and of course Kristen, Tina and Amy.

Which one of these ladies was your fave SNL cast member? Or suggest another if I didn’t include her. These are just my personal preferences. Bonus points if you remind us of a particular sketch.

Tina Fey mocks Sarah Palin

Last Saturday’s season premiere of Saturday Night Live hosted by super swimmer/comic dud Michael Phelps contained exactly one gem and it was in the show’s first five minutes.

I trust by now you’ve seen Tina Fey‘s uproarious imitation of Alaska governor and Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin?

Tina was joined by a very pregnant Amy Poehler as Hilary Clinton. Both were terrific and their mock speech about sexism in the election was achingly funny.

If you haven’t seen it, you need to. I can’t post it, but I can steer you here.
