The New York Dolls in pictures
Rock ‘n’ roll photog Bob Gruen just released a new book called New York Dolls: Photographs featuring pics he’s been shooting of the cross-dressing glam rock band for three decades.
The book has a commentary written by legendary rock writer Legs McNeil (Punk, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk ) and an afterword by Morrissey, who was, as a teen, the leader of the New York Dolls fan club in England, wrote a book about them in 1981, and played a huge role a few years ago in getting the Dolls to reunite and tour.
Gruen, 62, himself is a huge fan and writes that the Dolls, whom he met in 1973, “are like family to me.” Gruen marvels at the band’s far-reaching influence:
“Everyone from Joe Strummer, Gene Simmons to Bret Michaels all said they were influenced by the New York Dolls. They each found their own thing about the Dolls. Some people it was the music, some people it was the look, some people it was the attitude. The Dolls had it all.”
Here are a few pics from Gruen’s book. (Click any of them to enlarge):
Can I hear from my New York Dolls fans?
