The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Boy, was it good. Now I wanna see the movie starring Humphrey Bogart as hardboiled detective Sam Spade.

Have you read the book? Seen the movie? Can you recommend both?

“I’m a lesbian,” actress Kelly McGillis tells gay women’s web site She-Wired.com. Confirming what the rest of us suspected for 20 years. Say, do you suppose those rumors of her and Jodie hooking up while making The Accused might be true?

What the hell? It was as demented as it was brilliant. Guy Maddin, huh? Is he like the new David Lynch?

Diane Keaton’s charming colonial home

April 24, 2009 · 4 Comments

Apartment Therapy has some pictures from inside the home of Diane Keaton, one of my favorite Hollywood actresses. Her decor, it appears, is as eccentric as she is. I love it.

Very warm. Very charming. Just like Diane. Favorite Diane Keaton moment? Argh, so hard to pick, but certainly one of them is that bit in 1973’s Sleeper when she and Woody Allen are walking down the long corridor nitpicking at each other and her character accuses Woody’s of being “retarded.”

Currently (re) reading: “Me” by Katharine Hepburn

This is such an engaging memoir. Ms. Hepburn wrote it in a completely conversational style as if she’s actually talking to the reader. It’s jam-packed with stories and insights about key early Hollywood players like Louis B. Mayer, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, as well as Hepburn’s former beau Howard Hughes and, of course, her beloved Spencer Tracy.

If you’re ever hankering for a bit of Hepburn’s behind-the-scenes personality, you should start with Me. Unless you’ve already read it. Have you?

Did you watch ‘Grey Gardens’ last night?

I thought it was very good. I think Drew Barrymore could have an acting career beyond Adam Sandler movies. Who knew? Jessica Lange was at her very best. Wow. There is a scene where she (as Big Edie) sings “Tea For Two” while surrounded by squalor and it’s haunting. Whoever did the make-up on this film needs to win an armload of awards. Bra-vo!

Did you like it? How many of you have seen the original documentary?
