Bravo, Morrissey

March 30, 2009 · 2 Comments

Morrissey played Webster Hall in New York City recently and he banned the sale of meat at the concession stands while he was there.

Hell yes. I wish there were some data on how many people went vegetarian after hearing The Smiths‘ “Meat Is Murder” in the 1980s. I did.

My new (old) Roz Chast book

March 29, 2009 · 1 Comment

Yesterday I found this old Roz Chast book of comics at the Cleveland Park branch library book sale for just 10 cents! 10 cents!

Remember: Roz will be giving a talk about fellow New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams April 26 here in D.C. as part of the Smithsonian American Arts Museum’s “American Pictures Distinguished Lecture Series.”

Who’s going? I’ll be there.

Cassette tape rock star art

March 29, 2009 · 1 Comment

In the most creative recycling I’ve seen in a long time, some talented artist on Flickr makes these amazing portraits of rock stars using only cassette tape. (Kids, if you don’t know what cassette tape is, it’s the thin, seamless black ribbon found inside of musical cassettes old folks like me used to buy).

Look at these portraits, they’re amazing:

Bob Dylan:

Jimi Hendrix:

Jim Morrison:

Go to the Flickr site and see the rest. Bravo!

e.e. cummings on Spring

March 26, 2009 · 1 Comment

In Just

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman
whistles far and wee
and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it’s
spring
when the world is puddle-wonderful
the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing
from hop-scotch and jump-rope and
it’s
spring
and
the
goat-footed
balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

If you want to hear Leonard Cohen’s Live In London album before its release date (March 31), the NPR web site is streaming it right now.

He kind of looks like Richard Belzer on the cover, no?

Seriously. I just had some of the oven-roasted vegan slices with a lil’ tomato and Nayonaise* on whole wheat. Yum!

(* I know Veganaise is better, but I ran out).

“Where The Wild Things Are” trailer

March 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In the Everyone-In-The-Whole-Flipping-World-Is-Talking-About-This department: here’s the trailer for the new Spike Jonze flick Where The Wild Things Are, based on Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book.

Nice use of that Arcade Fire song. Makes me warm up to the band a bit more (Giggle: warm up to the Arcade Fire. Ha).

Okay, who among us will see this flick?

Electric Woman and Dyna-Girl were awesome. And had a theme song to rival Wonder Woman’s. Who knew that Electric Woman was future soap opera star Deidre Hall?

Don’t even think about dressing up as these two for Halloween. My friend Tracy and I already called it.

Did you watch the show? The 1970s ruled.
